Scientific proof of the benefits of humming to the sinuses was provided by an interesting study carried out in Sweden in 2002, and published in the well-respected medical journal the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
The researchers calculated that breathing out while humming resulted in 96% of the air in a normal maxillary sinus being exchanged in a single out-breath, compared with only 4% during quiet exhalation. They concluded that ‘humming is an extremely effective means of increasing sinus ventilation’.
